Frances Morton’s Graduation Speech 2019

Frances Morton’s Graduation Speech 2019:

When I was thinking about what theme I would pick for the graduation speech 2019 today I must admit I did not find it particularly easy. The graduation class of 2019 is leaving school and entering university and a world very different from the world I entered in 1988 (I am well old). The expectation on you is bigger than ever. I left school at a time when many of my friends didn’t go to university, some didn’t have the chance, others simply chose not to and took on professions that required less qualification. However, this is no longer the case. AND now that you are all graduating today and will be heading to University in the next few months, the degree is just the stepping stone for your careers and employers are expecting you to have qualities that are not necessarily written on paper. We hope that you have acquired many of those qualities and skills by attending CGB and completing your IB diploma.

Graduation Speech 2019 - 1

I want to share with you a short story from an unknown author that sums up what will be expected you when you get to university…

This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did. Somebody got angry about this, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realised that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

This little piece of humor is about taking responsibilities and fulfilling them. It is about people passing the buck onto others rather than taking responsibility for themselves. It shows us why Team Work, Communication and Leadership are important in doing anything in our lives.

You cannot say “It’s not my job”. Universities will have zero tolerance for that “it’s not my job” attitude.

Belong to a culture of learning from mistakes – Sometimes people shy away from taking ownership because they don’t want to be responsible if things go wrong. Admitting mistakes and learning from them can be one of the most powerful catalysts for your growth. Taking action, but getting it wrong, is better than not taking any action at all. The older we get the harder this can be.

And finally, advice that I am sure your parents have already given you:
1. Spend your money wisely
2. Know your worth – love yourself first the way you know you should be treated when you allow others to love you
3. Find a job you love – we don’t care what University you go to, or what job you end up with, as long as you’re doing something that makes you happy. When you are happy it doesn’t feel like work.
4. Be happy
5. Be responsible
6. Mean what you say
7. Treat others the way you want to be treated
8. Think about the future
9. Slow down
10. Do the right thing
11. Treasure your family
12. People are more important than things
13. Don’t sweat the small stuff
14. Believe in yourself
15. Believe that everything is going to be OK
16. And last but not least, you can always come home…..

The Graduation class of 2019, it has been an absolute pleasure to have made your acquaintance over the past two years, I wish you well on your journey.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Graduation Speech 2019:

Discurso de la Directora de Secundaria
(Frances Morton)

8. Piensa en el futuro
9. No vayas tan rápido
10. Haz lo correcto
11. Atesora a tu familia
