Key Stage 2

Key Stage Two is an important time for children in their schooling, as the students are learning new skills and concepts whilst consolidating others. At this level of education, the students are moving towards becoming more independent, self-disciplined and organised learners.

The department offers a wealth of very experienced, talented and committed staff, from a range of nationalities. Their knowledge of the British curriculum is excellent. All staff plan thoroughly, using long term, medium term and short term planning. Differentiation is also an integral part of the planning and teaching process in this Key Stage. It accommodates the specific learning needs of individuals within the class, offering a personalised education.

Recent SATS results across KS2 (Years 3-6) at CGB have been impressive. In 2006/07, 100% of Year 6 students attained a level 4 or above in Mathematics, Science and English.

Planning creative activities to excite and deepen children’s understanding of the different aspects of the KS2 curriculum is a key feature within the department.
Teachers build into their plans opportunities for a number of cross-curricular links, ensuring the children are given a broad and balanced experience.

Another unique feature of the Key Stage is “Specialist” teaching. To optimise teachers’ strengths and maximise student learning, we have implemented a system whereby teachers not only teach their delegated class, but also teach a preferred area of strength to all other classes in the Key Stage.

We have specialist teachers in Information Technology, History/Geography, Art and Design and Technology. These rotations happen on a weekly basis and other than the students receiving tuition from teachers who are highly skilled in these subject areas, it also enables teachers and students in this Key Stage to know everyone at a personal level. It also facilitates the students’ organisational skills, as they prepare for secondary schooling, where they have a variety of different teachers.
