Programmes

At CGB we strive to create a warm, friendly and positive environment in which young learners are supported, nurtured and encouraged to be proactive learners and to construct the foundations that will set them in good stead throughout their academic careers in both CGB and beyond.

Foundation stage and Key Stage 1

The first steps into formal education can be fraught with anxieties for both young students and especially parents.

At CGB we strive to create a warm, friendly and positive environment in which young learners are supported, nurtured and encouraged to be proactive learners and to construct the foundations that will set them in good stead throughout their academic careers in both CGB and beyond.

Key Stage 2

Key Stage Two is an important time for children in their schooling, as the students are learning new skills and concepts whilst consolidating others.

At this level of education, the students are moving towards becoming more independent, self-disciplined and organised.

Secondary

The Secondary Section of Colegio Gran Bretaña (CGB) is made up of:
  • Key Stage 3 (Years 7 – 9)
  • Key Stage 4 (Years 10 – 11)
  • Post-16 (Years 12 – 13)

The Post-16 level is equivalent to the high school years of a student following the American educational system.

IB Programme

Colegio Gran Bretana is an IB World School. We were authorised to offer the IB Diploma Programme in March 2008. The school will begin teaching the programme in August 2008.

It is important that parents, students and stakeholders log onto the IBO webpage (https://www.ibo.org/) to find out more about the organisation, its mission and vision and how this will enhance student learning at CGB. Another important link to the website is: https://www.ibo.org/diploma/become/ (English) and https://www.ibo.org/es/diploma/become/ (Spanish) where parents and students can find important information on the general rules of the Diploma Programme.

Co-curricular Activities

A variety of co-curricular activities is offered to students of all ages. The activities range from football and cooking lessons to photography and crafts.

It is our aim that all teachers and students participate in these clubs, as it not only stimulates the students but also helps to form good relationships across the school.

Art Department

Art and design promotes our student's creativity and imagination through providing art, craft and design activities that relate to their own identity and experiences, the natural and manmade objects and materials with which they are familiar with, and the locality in which they live in.

House System

The school House System was inaugurated at the Sports/Fun Day in June 2004.

Pupils are allocated to Houses from Nursery. They stay in the House as allocated throughout their time at Colegio Gran Bretaña. All family members are put into the same House, i.e. parents, children, siblings, and cousins.

There are four Houses named after mythological creatures – Griffin (green), Pegasus (white), Phoenix (red) and Minotaur (blue). These names were chosen by the students. There is a House Captain and Vice-Captain of each House in Primary and Secondary. All teachers are allocated a House, with two teachers acting as House Coordinators for each of the Houses.

Music Department

The students’ comprehension and appreciation of music is taught and cultivated through activities which ensure that listening and applying knowledge and understanding, are developed through the inter-related skills of performing, composing and appraising. Students are given the choice of having instruction with a specialist music teacher in either the violin, percussion or singing.

Performing Skills - Controlling sounds through singing and playing

The students:
  • Sing songs, in unison and two parts, with clear diction, control of pitch, a sense of phrase and musical expression
  • Play tuned and untuned instruments with control and rhythmic accuracy
  • Practise, rehearse and present performances with an awareness of the audience

Honours and Colours

The ethos of the school promotes commitment to excellence in Academic Endeavours, Sports and Sportsmanship & Cultural Activities.

The CGB colours and honours system promotes and recognises excellence and achievement from our students.
