Colegio Gran Bretaña is a unique school in Colombia because:
  • It is the only school in Colombia where the medium of instruction is English as a first language.
  • It is the only school in Colombia with a double international accreditation. NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges) and CIS (Council of International Schools).

1. Personalised Education

The school ensures that class sizes are appropriate in order to provide the personal attention necessary to deliver a high quality educational programme. Average per class 12-16 students.

The teaching methodology of the school is firmly based on the conviction that the different learning styles of individuals is essential to effective academic and social development.

Learning objectives are set for each student. Relevant differentiation is made to allow students to work and study at a speed and level commensurate with their academic development and potential, while at the same time bringing all students to agreed competency standards at each grade level.

2. British Curriculum


The school follows the National Curriculum of England and Wales, with the addition of the Colombian Sociales from Year 3 onwards. One 40-minute lesson per day is allocated to the teaching of the Spanish language to all students.

In the British Curriculum:
  • High academic standards are achieved.
  • The teaching activities are designed to be varied and stimulating, as well as related to students’ experiences and prior learning.
  • Design & Technology is offered.
  • Literacy and Numeracy is emphasized.
  • Teachers are aware of the need to differentiate according to the various abilities and backgrounds within the group. Learning objectives are set for each student


3. International Environment


It is the only school in Colombia with a truly international student and staff population.

4. Specialised and imported teachers


It is the policy of the school to contract teachers who have a minimum British degree level qualification in education (B Ed or equivalent level), or an internationally recognised equivalent. Each class group has an English speaking teacher experienced in the delivery of the English National Curriculum. In addition, qualified subject specialists teach Spanish, Colombian social studies and other specialist subjects

In addition to all the above the school offers:
  • Differentiated Spanish classes for all its students, Beginners/Intermediate and Advanced.
  • Standardised testing at the end of Year 2 (Grade 1 US), Year 6 (Grade 5 US) and Year 9 (Grade 8 US).
  • International Examinations with the University of Cambridge at the end of Year 11 (Grade 10 US) in all subjects.
  • A Post 16 Programme (Grades 12 and 13 US) with courses that are at Advanced Placement Level and beyond.
  • A music programme in Primary and Secondary with specialists for choir, recorder, violin, guitar and percussion instruments.
  • An extra-curricular programme which has offered the following activities: Soccer, volleyball, rugby, basketball, tennis, swimming, horse riding, choir, theatre production, dance, band, carpentry, homework club etc.
  • Accreditation with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges U.S. (NEASC) .
The committee on American and International Schools abroad (CAISA) has granted us Candidacy Status with NEASC on 4th December 2002. We received a full team accreditation visit in March 2004 and received accreditation status in April 2004.
  • The school offers selected courses to help students meet the requirements of the US High School Diploma.
  • Introducing US History and Government into the regular school timetable in the appropriate grade levels.
  • Introducing over the next years the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme in Grades 11 and 12 (US) which is recognised by most US colleges for entry and for additional course credits according to IB Examination outcomes".
